The first popular drink was not beer but mead.
This drink is often referred to as the forerunner of beer, and throughout history it has proven to be one of the oldest and most consumed soft drinks by man around the planet and over many generations.
What is mead?
It is an alcoholic beverage obtained from the fermentation of water and honey mixed in different proportions and has an alcohol concentration that usually ranges between 10 and 15%.
Popular Mead
The fame and admiration of this drink goes back thousands of years, in Europe.
It was consumed with authentic enjoyment by different civilizations throughout history.
Peoples such as the Normans and Celts; the Greeks, Romans, Saxons and Vikings made mead their motive for festivities and celebrations.
It is also known that in America mead was produced thanks to ancestral recipes of indigenous peoples.
Such was his fame that even Julius Caesar made mead his favorite drink.
There are many stories about this drink, but in particular the Nordic mythology tells that Odin only fed on mead, the same as -it seems to be- the Mayas did.
The Nordics in particular used mead in their meetings and important celebrations, going so far as to attribute to this drink more curative properties than sensations of enjoyment.
Nowadays, and in our culture, it is another alternative to the wide range of alcoholic beverages that exist but is characterized by bringing together very specific groups of consumers: followers of Viking culture, unconditional Star Wars saga and gamers mainly.
Nowadays it is still a very demanded and commercialized product.
The notoriety of this drink has grown exponentially in recent years as a result of super productions such as the aforementioned Star Wars but also by fiction series such as Game of Thrones, medieval aesthetics, with a considerable dramatic load and strong links to artisanal drinks, which has inspired legions of new consumers.
This circumstance has also led us, producers, to increase our production, but also to continue innovating to offer a product of extraordinary quality, at the height of a public also more knowledgeable and demanding.
Today we can say that mead competes strongly with sectors as consolidated as beer and wine.
In Valhalla we not only have our own brand but we are also tremendously respectful of the original mead formulas that inspired so many cultures throughout history. Our small tribute is to continue making a mead that today is appreciated and valued around the world.
It is a pity that Odin is not with us to entertain him...
What are your reasons for consuming mead?
